Could Inspiration Strike at a Weirder Time?

I noticed that I get all my writing ideas while living, and not thinking about writing. I know that sounds weird, but you'd think the most typical story ideas would be inspired by paintings or articles or something brilliant like learning the advancements made in cloning. Very cool, but knowing these things gets me thinking and talking and researching and... it ends there; fodder for my stories, but nothing that ignites a two week writing binge.

So what does inspire? Oh boy. The weirdest things. So if you have a minute, let's sink into the oblivion that is my mind. We can check out yours next.

So the weirdest place I ever got an idea for a story was in a restaurant bathroom. My little one was in the stall and I was waiting. Waiting patiently. He kept asking if I was there, as if I might vanish. It got me thinking, what if I suddenly passed out and didn't wake up for ten years? This freaky bathroom would be my last image and suddenly I would be... where? What would happen next? What would I miss... And this turned into the first scene of book about a guy who remembers everything, even his past lives and well... he meets a memory eraser he can't keep his paws off. How did I make the leap? No idea and a gal can't explain magic like that.

Not sure why, but I always get a story idea when I'm cleaning the house. Something about the smell of cleaning solution gets my imagination working in ways it really shouldn't. Really, it's the ultimate cure for writer's block.

Once, I even got an idea while my child was throwing up with the flu. Odd, I know, but it got me thinking about a mother helping her a child, and next thing I know I'm painting a scene with words that involved talking to a horse. Again, sounds like a leap, but it'll all make sense to you when you read it.

Another place that never fails to inspire me is church. It's quiet, someone is reading awesome stories about magic, miracles, and then these stories are explored and applied into today's world. My Gosh!... it's a breeding ground for incredible ideas. I usually write until I fall into a coma after mass and I never know where it'll take me.

When I was working in retail I had to walk past the automotive section daily to get to my department, and they had out these monstrous containers for the back of trucks. And, being me, I always avoided them, a little freaked out that someone might be hiding in one and jump out to scare me. This thought grew into a story for a somewhat morbid play.

The opening scene for the last book in the Notebook Chronicles came to me during a meeting. The speaker was talking about how to captivate a tourist. It was a good presentation but my shoes were hurting my feet, and pain ignites my creativity. I pondered the choice of my foot wear and decided I should have worn runners. This gave me an image-- a sneaker in the middle of a road. That would really captivate someone. Make them question a few things, maybe they'd even get out of the car puzzled... and so this is how the scene came to life. A shoe in the middle of the road. Who did it belong to?

And of course, my all time favourite, and I know I already mentioned it, but it was an author interview. I was curious about this author and wanted to see what she had to say. She said something that inspired me to write. I mean, write. Okay that sounds stupid, I've been writing since I was 13. I mean it inspired me to write every single day without fail, without fear, without boundaries. What did she say? The interviewer asked why her characters were so hot and she answered, "Because I wrote them that way."  Now that's power that inspires.

So what weird places or things inspire you?

Ten Minutes in the Cold

So it’s cold right now on the prairies. It might be cold elsewhere too but all I know is that it's 40 below cold here.

So this morning, I slipped on my ski pants and boots. Over my layers of shirts and sweaters I added the parka. I picked the warmest tuque, it's not mine, but it was sitting there so why not? The scarf was the one from Hogwarts that I bought in Florida where it’s probably not 40 below ever. And yes, I see the irony in that.

Now when I went to grab my mitts there was one glove and one mitt. Weird, but these things happen, I have no idea how. Somewhere out in the cold is someone I love wearing one mitt and one glove. Now we have hundreds of gloves and mitts, but all bundled up like I was, searching for them would be a feat and I was already running late, so I just grabbed the mitt and glove and headed out the door.

About ten seconds in I noticed a cold spot on my leg. My boots must have pushed up my pants and my ski pants. I didn't have far to walk and figured I could probably tough it out. Over all, the walk should take a minute or two. Wrong. About ten more seconds in I couldn’t stand it and had to remove the glove to fix the problem.

Bending over pulled my jacket up and it tangled in my layers of sweaters and my lower back was exposed. Did I mention it was 40 below? Seriously, when that cold hit my bare skin I must have opened my eyes to twice their size, which kinda burned and now they're really tired.

I put the mitt on and removed the glove. Because as you can imagine, that hand was cold by now. (I was feeling a bit like a whimp at this point.) And so I fixed my jacket, but I felt all tangled up underneath and I hate that.

I glanced back at the house as I put the mitt on and wondered if going to work was really worth this effort. But! I was only a half a block away so I plunged forth. The road was covered in drifts so I thought myself brilliant and proceeded to climb one. It was soft and I soon discovered that I hadn't really fixed my boot problem, and I quickly found a place where my mitt wasn't tucked in enough. Nice to know after all these years I still can't dress myself properly.

Five minutes later, what did I see when I got to work? My door was buried, the shovel peeking out along the bottom and an impending avalanche loomed over the doorway from the roof. My thought process? Is it faster to dig in or go home? And trust me, speed was my goal here. I opted for digging, telling myself that I could get in in under 5 minutes. Besides it’s best to dig while the snow is soft and I’m kinda dressed for it.

Don’t you love winter? How are you staying warm?

How Harry Potter Changed the World

I like the idea of a magical story impacting the lives of children. Just this week I witnessed it several times.

The first time I heard about Harry Potter was from a teenager many years ago. She was a huge fan and kept making references to magic I wasn't getting so I started reading the books to get up to date. Since then, it seems everyone just lives and breaths the magic, and if I wasn't in the know, I'd be missing out on a lot of fun.

I was walking through the school to pick up some kids for an after school program when a six-year-old randomly stands in front of me all serious. He took a deep breath and just blurted out, "So where are you on the Harry Potter Lego Game? I'm stuck." Ha! Love it. Of course it ended up being a very in-depth gamer discussion.

And so I'm reading a book with my teen and after a shape-shifting scene she jokes, "Someone drank their polyjuice." I won't ever be able to read a shifting scene again without chuckles.

And I'm standing out in the cold, wrapped in my scarf when a young boy asks if I went to school at Hogwarts. He looked so serious. Why would someone ask that? Confused, it took me a moment to realized I was wearing my Gryffindor scarf. And so I played along and asked if he had attended the school of Wizardry and Witchcraft also. Of course he had.

Have you noticed the magic of a Potter fan?

I like it when a magical story impacts my life like that.
